Julian Baker, who is now the director of the European college of Bowen Studies, brought this exiting new therapy to the U.K in the early 1990s. He first experienced Bowen Technique whilst living in Australia. It is named after Tom Bowen who first devised and evolved the method of healing. Born in 1916 in Geelong, Australia, Tom worked as labourer after leaving school at the age of 14 and he took a keen interest in sport, helping to coach youngsters various disciplines, especially in swimming.
During this period he started to treat people after work, and before long opened a full clinic. He had no formal training in the medical world so was quite a remarkable man, and it is said that with just one look he could “see” what was wrong with a patient and see from where the problem was emanating. He did not enjoy good health himself. He was profoundly deaf and was a severe diabetic through which he lost a leg. Shortly before his death in 1982, he lost his second leg.
